Description
~ petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is an interesting cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. The lines in this example have a bit less contrast, though it's more translucent than others I've cut. It has only a few holes, the largest of which is lined with translucent bluish agate, or (common) opal. Nearly all the others are filled. They look a lot like tiny thundereggs, complete with fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a crisp designer shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 62x20mm
Weight: approximately 45 carats
