Binghamite cab ~
Here is a cabochon of ultra rare binghamite, from Minnesota. Closely related kin to tigereye and silkstone, binghamite typically also displays a fine chatoyance. So much so, it's often refered to as 'the American pietersite'. Binghamite is all but extinct nowadays, and I hear even the old mine dumps and tailings have been thoroughly depleted long ago. This collectible cab is an excellent example, featuring strong coloration in silky reddish maroon and yellowish bronze. The dark areas and streaks are shiny metallic hematite that don't reveal much of their real nature in the pics. The stone has a very high rounded dome, a designer 'flame' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back. And my per carat price is a steal!
