Description
~ Binghamite cab ~

Offered here is a large cabochon of rare binghamite, from Minnesota. Closely related kin to tigereye and silkstone, classic binghamite has a fine degree of chatoyance, like this excellent example. It's all but extinct nowadays, and I hear even the old mine dumps and tailings were overgrown and thoroughly depleted long ago. This cab features silky streaks of golden yellow-orange with hints of red, and the darker bluish areas are 'pearls' of darkly shiny metallic hematite. It's much nicer than the photos, which don't illustrate much of the chatoyance or the reflective quality of the metallics. It has a high rounded dome, a long designer 'paisley' shape, and a sleek polish both front and back.

Size: 65x19mm
Weight: approximately 54 carats
