Description
~ Howardite cab ~

Offered here is a cabochon of top quality howardite (an unsual and rare form of opal silicated tuff), from northern Nevada. Sometimes called 'rattlesnake stone', it has wonderfully bright coloration, and figure so unusual you'll never forget it. The pattern reminds me of crazy venetian blinds or zippers, oddly enough. The darkest areas you see in the pic are actually highly translucent, nearly perfectly clear, giving the stone an outstanding quality of depth. It's stunning against the light, as the backlit photo illustrates, so please be sure to click it up to full size to view the amazing detail. It's not only very rare, but a fabulously gorgeous gemstone, and this one includes a few sparkling druzy pockets. It has a very high rounded dome, a crisp symmetrical designer 'shield' shape, and a glossy polish both front and back. I must mention that the top edge is a bit lacking in luster; however, all things considered, it's not a distraction, and much of it will be hidden by most any type of setting.

Size: 52x24mm
Weight: approximately 42 carats
