Howardite cab ~
Here is a designer cabochon of howardite (an unsual and rare form of opal silicated tuff), from northern Nevada. Sometimes called 'rattlesnake stone', it has wonderfully nice coloration and figure, reminding me of crazy venetian blinds or zippers, oddly enough. The darkest areas you see in the pic are actually highly translucent, giving the stone an amazing quality of depth. It has a high rounded dome, a gracefully curvy shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.
