~ Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a fascinating cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon, near the Idaho/Oregon border. (You can read more about this material on my blog.) The species has been identified as sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has rich coloration in deeper sandalwood shades, and an amazing pattern of tiny holes, which are lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal; all of the smallest are filled solid, or almost so. They look like tiny geodes, and all show fortifications. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Much moreso than these photos could ever illustrate. This cab has a high rounded dome of 7mm, a designer teardrop shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 36x20mm
Weight: approximately 28 carats
