Description
~ Royal eyes cabenite jasper cab ~

Offered here is a cabochon of cabenite, also called royal eyes jasper. It was found years ago around McDermitt, on the Nevada/Oregon border, in thunderegg form. The fellow who mined this intriguing material was offering some small (& rather expensive) slabettes again at last year's Madras gem show, and my wife Rain chose the very best he had. This example shows a wild array of the various patterns this jasper can have, and I think it's quite attractive. A couple areas are reminiscent of Bruneau jasper, while other areas have streamers and colors similar to those seen in some Morrisonite and Willow Creek jaspers. I like how the jasper in this stone is so perfectly "married" to the contrasting reddish matrix, which was sound enough to take an excellent polish, just like the gemmy part, which is framed with deep green mosses. The stone has a well rounded dome of 4.5mm, and a gracefully curved designer 'flame' shape that's highly polished front and back.

Size: 47x24mm
Weight: approximately 38 carats
