Description
~ Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a large, deluxe cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has great contrasting lines, as well as an amazing pattern of uniquely shaped spots and vugs, the largest of which are open clear through to the backside. The holes are lined with translucent agate or (common) opal, resembling tiny thundereggs, complete with fortifications. Some even appear to have tiny quartz crystals! Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me a little of howardite, what do you think? This cab has a nicely rounded dome of 7mm, a gracefully curved designer 'teardrop' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 49x29mm
Weight: approximately 60 carats
