Description
~ Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a striking cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example also has an amazing pattern of tiny ornately shaped holes and pools, each of which is lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal. Only a few of the holes penetrate through to the backside. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me of howardite, what do you think? This cab has a nicely rounded dome of 5mm, a versatile designer shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 48x23mm
Weight: approximately 35 carats
