Description
~ Binghamite cab ~

Offered here is a designer cabochon of ultra rare binghamite, from Minnesota. Closely related kin to tigereye and silkstone, binghamite typically also displays a fine chatoyance. So much so, it's often refered to as 'the American pietersite'. It's all but extinct nowadays, and I hear even the old mine dumps and tailings have been thoroughly depleted long ago. This collectible cab is an excellent example, with a nice velvety chatoyance throughout. It's composed of silky salmon pastels, with golden yellow slashes and a few hints of red, along with a deep burgundy area at the pointed end. The thin dark lines are actually shiny metallic hematite that don't reveal much of their nature in the photos. Please click to enlarge the photos for the most realistic views. The stone has a rounded dome of 6mm, and a gracefully curved 'flame' shape, highly polished both front and back. And my per carat price for a binghamite of this size & quality is a steal!
