Opalite cab ~
Offered here is a unique cabochon of opalite, from the Brush-Wellman beryllium mine in Utah (now closed to any and all collecting). Sometimes known as bertrandite, Tiffany stone, ice cream opal, and even 'Purple Passion', no matter what you call it, it's certainly expressive stuff! I'm told this rare opalite gets its beautiful coloration from fluorite. My son Christopher cut this richly colored example, which has both light and dark shades of purple, with a craquelure patchwork of yellow, gold, ochre, white, black and even bits of red adding extra character. Some areas are translucent too. There is a degree of undercutting, a couple of tiny pits, as well as some areas of matte finish to be aware of. It has a high rounded dome of 7.5mm, and a fine glossy polish both front and back.
