Description
~ Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is an interesting cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (You can read more about this material on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a WILD zig-zag herringbone pattern. It has rich coloration and strong contrast, with deeper shades through the middle, lighter butternut bands at either end. There are only a few penetrating holes here, lined with translucent gray and white agate, or (common) opal; the smallest are filled solid. They resemble tiny embedded thundereggs. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a rounded dome of 6mm, a versatile designer 'spear' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 53x25mm
Weight: approximately 56 carats
