Description
~ Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is an extraordinary LARGE collector's cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This example has an amazing grain pattern, riddled with ornately shaped agate pools & holes, each of which is lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal. They resemble tiny embedded thundereggs, each one with its own unique shape, many of which show fancy fortifications. Only a few penetrate clear through to the backside. It is positively STUNNING backlit! Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me of howardite, what do you think? This showpiece cab has a low but well rounded dome of 6mm, a designer 'paisley' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back. I'm not often tempted to keep a stone, but this is one I'll probably regret letting go!
