Ammonite cab ~
Offered here is a large cabochon cut from a fossil ammonite, from Madagascar. The species is Cleoniceras madagascariense, and I'm told it lived hundreds of millions of years ago. This example is golden amber with olive green, and shows a fascinating suture pattern of growth events which can be seen as white lines, many of which resemble the shape of oak leaves. Those interlocking sutures are thought to have allowed the living ammonite to withstand the immense pressure of the underwater depths. This one's particularly attractive to my eye, very gemmy, with translucence that looks like marmalade jam when backlit. A scattering of tiny pinpoint voids in the greenish area are the only flaws I can find, and the backside has a pair of sparkling druzy cavities. No doubt it'll make a fascinating piece of jewelry! The cab has a well rounded dome of nearly 6mm, and a slick glossy polish both front and back.
