Description
~ Mtorolite cab ~

Offered here is a cabochon of unusual mtorolite, from Zimbabwe. After pawing through (literally) tons of this material in Tucson, only one piece was selected that had these odd little plumes. They aren't typical, but that makes it more interested to me. Mtorolite is usually a lot like chrysoprase, which is a green chalcedony colored by the presence of nickel. This stuff gets its color instead from chromium, hence its other moniker, chrome chalcedony. This example also has some tiny sparkly crystalline spots, nearly all beneath the surface. The cab has a high rounded dome of 6.5mm, an elongated teardrop shape, and a brilliant glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 36x25mm
Weight: approximately 37 carats
