Description
~ Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is a fascinating cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (You can read more about this material on my my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a wavy herringbone pattern. This example has rich coloration in warm sandalwood shades, with darker contrasting lines, as well as an amazing display of ornate holes that penetrate clear through to the backside. The voids are lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal. Some of them look like tiny geodes, complete with fancy fortifications, and each has its own unique shape. There are probably tiny druzy crystals lining the holes. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! This cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a bold designer shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 59x23mm
Weight: approximately 35 carats
