Description
~ Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is an extraordinary collector's cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This LARGE, deluxe example has an amazing grain pattern, riddled with ornately shaped holes, each of which is lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal. They resemble tiny embedded geodes or thundereggs, each one with its own unique shape, showing fancy fortifications, with the larger holes penetrating clear through to the backside. It is positively STUNNING backlit! And I'm fairly sure there is some super tiny crystal growth inside the tubes. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me of howardite, what do you think? This showpiece cab has a well rounded dome of nearly 6mm, a designer 'teardrop' shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back. I'm not often tempted to keep a stone, but this is one I will probably regret not holding on to!

Size: 51x24mm
Weight: approximately 42 carats
