Description
~ Hell's Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is an LARGE & extraordinary cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This intriguing example is strongly marked with outstanding ring and grain patterns, and it's riddled with pools and holes, each of which is lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal. They resemble tiny embedded geodes or thundereggs, some with fancy fortifications, each with its own unique shape. A few penetrate clear through to the backside. I'm fairly sure there is some super tiny crystal growth lining those. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the fascinating details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me a little of howardite, what do you think? This sweet cab has a well rounded dome of 5mm, a gracefully fluid designer shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 68x26mm
Weight: approximately 56 carats
