Description
~ Hells Canyon petrified wood cab ~

Offered here is an extraordinary cabochon of petrified wood, an unsual and rare form from Hell's Canyon near the Idaho/Oregon border. (Read more about it on my blog.) The species is said to be sequoia, showing fascinating wavy annual growth lines in a herringbone pattern. This intriguing example is strongly marked with outstanding ring and grain patterns, and it's riddled with holes, each of which is lined with translucent quartz, milky agate, or (common) opal. They resemble tiny embedded geodes or thundereggs with fancy fortifications, each one with its own unique shape. The largest penetrate clear through to the backside. I'm fairly sure there is some super tiny crystal growth lining those. Be sure to click to enlarge the photos to see the details. I'm no expert on pet wood, but this material seems opalized to some degree, and it certainly is GORGEOUS! Reminds me of howardite, what do you think? This sweet cab has a well rounded dome of 6mm, a versatile designer shape, and a slick glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 52x27mm
Weight: approximately 48 carats
