Description
~ Ammonite cab ~

Offered here is a cabochon cut from a fossil ammonite, from Madagascar. The species is Cleoniceras madagascariense, and I'm told it lived hundreds of millions of years ago. This golden amber colored cab shows an interesting suture pattern of growth events which can be seen as dark lines roughly resembling the shape of oak leaves. Those interlocking sutures are thought to have allowed the living ammonite to withstand the pressure of the underwater depths. This one's very gemmy and translucent, with a couple neat crystalline vugs on the backside, and should make a fascinating piece of jewelry! The cab has a high and well rounded dome of nearly 6mm, and a slick glossy polish both front and back.

Size: 38x18 mm
Weight: approximately 31 carats
