Description
~ Peanut wood cab ~

Here is a designer cabochon of rare petrified peanut wood, also known as teredo wood. This ancient fossil material is an Araucaria species of tree, found in the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia. If you look closely, you can see the glowing root beer color of the partially translucent agate around where it's pierced by the white areas. The white spots are actually part of a network of holes where the once-living wood was bored by Teredo Mollusks, aka shipworms. Over millennia, those holes were filled with radiolarite, an odd form of common opal. It certainly cuts unusual, eye-catching gemstones, and it's sure to be an interesting attraction in your jewelry or collection! The cab is quite substantial with a 10mm high dome, a sleek symmetrical shape, and a great glossy polish both front and back.

Size: 53 x 24 mm
Weight: approximately 72 carats
