Binghamite cab ~
Here is a designer cabochon of rare binghamite, from Minnesota. Closely related kin to tigereye and silkstone, binghamite typically exhibits a chatoyance all its own. Sadly, it's all but extinct nowadays, and I hear even the old mine dumps and tailings have been thoroughly depleted long ago. This cab features silky streaks of golden yellow with red, and the blackish areas are actually darkly shiny metallic hematite that don't show up well in the photos. A splendid example! It has a very high rounded dome of 7+mm, a sleek symmetrical shape, and an excellent polish both front and back.
