Howardite cab ~
Offered here is a designer cabochon of howardite (an unsual and rare form of opal silicated tuff), from northern Nevada. Sometimes called 'rattlesnake stone', it has wonderfully bright coloration and figure, reminding me of crazy venetian blinds or zippers, oddly enough. The darkest areas you see in the pic are actually highly translucent, nearly perfectly clear, as the backlit photo illustrates. It has a well rounded dome of 5mm, a sleek shape, and a brilliant polish both front and back.
